new version sets home page?
Hey guys,
First let me say that Zinc is the finest media center for online content there is. I love the look of the new version but one thing is troubling. Zinc now changes my home page in firefox. I have been using the firefox plugin with a special icon on the desktop to open firefox as zinc, but when i use my regular firefox icon I want the netflix home page to come up. Since the update, zinc changes the firefox home page back to zinc every time i start it. Is there a way to stop this?
Sorry for the delay.
Are you running the zinc standalone application or are you using the extensions inside of firefox? Your description leads me to believe you are using the extensions inside of firefox and you are using it as a general purpose browser, but I have to assume you are using the standalone app, since we don't touch any of these settings when we run as an extension. If this is the case, then the problem may be due to an issue we have with the way mozilla handles windows and tabs during a restart and a fix we put in to prevent it from opening multiple tabs after an upgrade.
Since netflix is a tile already, is this really a big issue? Is there someway we could alleviate your issue without relinquishing the home page? Or perhaps you should try loading the extensions into a stock installation of firefox (note that support for FF 3.6 is not out yet, but should be soon).
Thanks
jlm,
thanks for your response. I am in fact running the extension. I just had a shortcut on the desktop that would start zinc directly in full screen mode, as well as the regular firefox logo that would open the browser at my netflix homepage. easy for all concerned to get the the netflix queue to add/drop movies. Now as soon as you guys support that feature.....
this has worked perfectly up until the latest update. Now if I change my home page to anything other than zinc, as soon as I start zinc, it changes the home page back to itself.
Doug
Doug,
I cannot reproduce this using the extensions. Could you send me the command line from the shortcut? We should also verify that you are running build 11152. And are you running FireFox 3.5.7?
You can mail it to support@zinc.tv if you'd prefer not to post it.
Thanks,
JLM
guys I am really sorry I did not realize this was a developers forum. I just saw the "general help" topic and clicked it. Sorry to hassle you guys.
Here is the command line: (got this from one of the other forums I think)
"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -zviewer
my version string is in fact 08.10.11155
and no I am not updated to firefox 3.5.7. thanks to this I just noticed that my media center is still on firefox 3.0something. DOH! guess I better get on that.
Thanks again and again sorry for using the wrong forum and then hassling you guys.
I just upgraded my firefox to 3.6 but the behavior is the same.
change homepage to anything besides zinc
regular firefox icon starts this homepage fine
start firefox with the zinc icon (-zviewer at the end of command line)
zinc comes up in beautiful full screen glory just as always
(this is the purpose for the 2 icons. to start zinc automatically in full screen)
close zinc
open firefox with regular firefox icon and the home page has been changed to zinc's chrome: URL.
The only reason I have the two separate icons is so my wife can easily start up regular firefox in order to manage our netflix queue, but also be able to start zinc in fullscreen mode without going to the menus or hitting F11. If you guys ever get the ability to manage the netflix queue, I will never run firefox without zinc again.
Hi Doug,
Unfortunately, I think you are being confused by having both standalone Zinc and the Firefox extension loaded on your system. There are subtle differences that can be confusing to users that load both.
There is an FAQ that explains the differences:
What are the differences between Zinc's Windows application and Firefox extension?
To avoid the confusion you can disable the Zinc Firefox extensions in the Firefox browser.
Let me us know if this clears up the confusion...
Sorry Grose, no confusion here. I do NOT have the standalone version loaded, ONLY the extension. I have 2 ICONS for firefox. One that starts firefox normally and one that starts firefox with zinc loaded in fullscreen mode using the -zviewer command line switch. This has always been working just fine.
The issue is that with beta-5, every time I start zinc in any way, whether with my icon or with the toolbar button, zinc changes my homepage in firefox to its own chrome URL.
Using the two icons gives me an easy way (for the wife mostly) to get to our netflix queue to manage it, using the regular firefox icon with netflix account as my homepage. The other icon starts zinc automatically so that way I do not have to teach her about "view->fullscreen" or ask here to go to the PC and hit F11.
WATCHING anything from netflix is always done with zinc by the way. Your interface to netflix is better than theirs is we think. Just no way to manage the queue from zinc.
It occurs to me that maybe the solution is to in fact uninstall the extension and install the standalone version. I just didn't want two copies of firefox for no good reason since the extension worked so well. Am I really the only one using the extension that has this homepage issue?

really? no help at all? if I am being dumb here please let me know. If there is an easy way to disable this "feature" please let me know. Just setting the homepage back to netflix does not do the trick.
Thanks
Doug
